Organic Farming with Compost Tea

Compost tea Organic farming

By Wormy.Weedy

Description and properties:

Compost tea, resulting from an aerobic maceration, offers a biologically active product, containing the "good" compost bacteria. As a result, its properties are antiparasitic on the one hand, and fertilizing. It boosts the biological activity of the soil. The beneficial micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.) contained in the tea will promote the microbial life of your substrate. In addition, these beneficial micro-organisms will produce amino acids and enzymes promoting the release of nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, but also trace elements (magnesium, iron, sodium, copper, manganese, cobalt , zinc, selenium, boron, molybdenum).

  1.    Preparation of compost tea:

We start by preparing our bucket:

15 liters of water at 20°c,  prefered is rainwater or water with a pH of 6.5-7. You can decant your water for 24 hours under a bubbler before preparing your tea if you do not have access to rainwater.

The preparation will be done in two parts, the contents of your bag / net which will serve as an infuser and the contents to put in your water.

You need to have good compost, not a boring “garbage heap”. The compost must be of good quality so that the tea, which will reflect it, is also good. It must be ripe, therefore at least 4 to 8 months old respectively, but not much longer, otherwise it will be less interesting from a nutritional point of view.

Put the compost in the cloth bundle or canvas bag, along with the other components from the list above, and submerge it in the water. Install the bubbler and let it run, and we add the components in the water and it's off for 48 hours. (In the absence of a bubbler, you will have to stir very often because if the oxygenation is insufficient, it will increase the duration of the process which may encourage the development of pathogens. If you did not use a bag to put the compost to infuse, you must filter the maceration.)

  1.    Using Compost Tea:

Compost tea cannot be stored, it must be used as soon as it is ready and within 6 hours maximum because, thereafter, the micro-organisms will die, having no more food, and therefore the tea will lose its properties.

By watering on the ground, on damp soil or on plants that do not show a lack of watering. In foliar spray, the dilution of compost tea is generally done at 20%, that is to say 1 liter of tea for 5l of water, The application of compost tea is done away from direct sunlight, or when the lamps are off, either when the sky is overcast or at dawn.

  1.    Conclusion :
  •   Helps extend root systems
